N.Z. team named

Experience is the key to the predictable New Zealand women’s golf team of five named yesterday afternoon after three days of trials at Russley.

The team (in alphabetical order) is: Jan Arnold (Hamilton), Liz Douglas (Invercargill), Debbie Randell (Nelson), Brenda Rhodes (Bay of Plenty-Thames Valley), Jan Scandrett (Otago). Robyn Boniface (Invercargill) is the non-travel-ling reserve.

All five golfers have previously represented New Zealand senior teams in international competition — Mrs Douglas, Miss Arnold and Mrs Rhodes comprising the Espirito Santo team which finished second in last year’s world teams’ tournament.

Miss Arnold was the outstanding player in the trials. She won her four matchplay contests and all were against her international team-mates. Mrs Douglas was little inferior and she headed Miss Arnold in the stableford competition. In spite of her lack of success at Russley, Mrs Rhodes, the national stroke and foursomes champion, had the form background. Miss Randell, with an excellent win against Mrs Rhodes yesterday, deserved her selection, and Miss Scandrett’s strength gave her a slight advantage over the consistent Mrs Boniface and the unlucky Bay of Plenty junior, Kaye Carroll.
