Compulsory unionism
Sir,—l am worried about the power unions are gaining and how New Zealanders are letting it happen. Unions are private organisations. They have anyone who wants to produce over a barrel—join or no job. Tell me what other private body has compulsory membership. Now they are telling some men they have got to support others with levies on their wages. Surely we have ownership of the money we have worked for and should not be under threat of job loss if we do not knuckle under to union rule. And when the strikes are on, do the big union bosses go without pay or their fancy cars? What sort of a racket are we getting sucked into? Free to choose is the only way man can progress and develop as he sees fit for him in his life.—Yours, etc T. TURPIN. May 31, 1983.
