Maori news

Sir,—The racism and xenophobia of many New Zealanders is well illustrated by the uproar over “Te Karere” (The Maori news). On this morning’s radio the view was expressed that not including subtitles in English was as “rude as whispering in public.” This seems

akin to those infantile reactions of many people when they overhear two foreigners speaking their own language, namely: “they’re not making any effort to speak our language” or “they’re talking about me.” The suggestion that sub-titles would allow people to learn more Maori from “Te Karere,” though more rational, is misguided. Subtitles would merely serve to entrench viewers in their comfortable monolingualism in that they could then read the English and ignore the Maori “babble.” TVNZ has also been criticised for bowing to the clamourings of a vocal minority. What then of “Agßeport,” “On The Mat,” and “Radio With Pictures”?—Yours, etc., A. M. WORRALL. May 26, 1983.
