Rent freeze

Sir,—lt was with a sense of scepticism that I learnt that some Christchurch landlords have been forced to sell off some of their flats during the current economic freeze (“The Press,” May 24). While it could be true that some landlords may be facing economic hardship, the majority of all people have had to tighten their belts during this current freeze, and the reality for most has been that they have had to grin and bear the freeze, not moan about it. However, if the Landlords Association were truly concerned about the plight of tenants unable to find accommodation, would it not be better to call on the Government to provide more State rental accommodation and to demand that more finance be made available to the populace to satisfy the present demand for low-cost housing, a cause which seems to have been lost in the present demand for economic restraint.—Yours, etc., PETER W. KENNEDY. May 24, 1983.
