Railway bridge demolition
Sir,—May I record for posterity through your column that I have personally objected to the Minister of Railways, Forests and other M.P.s about the demolition of the Waiau branch Hurunui railway bridge. I must emphasise very strongly that this objection is in no way connected to the Weka Pass Railway Society or its plans for a tourist train. My point is that while it stands (still basically capable of carrying 1000 tonne loads) it keeps the option open for private-public body use—such as forestry, to operate a feeder service by rail tb the main trunk rail system and all that can offer—demolished, that opportunity is gone forever. Its removal is a criminal act against the generations to come and will condemn the Weka Pass “juggernaut” and death trap to
exacting its grim toll forever. Could I afford a legal injunction, I would—Yours, etc., JOHN S. J. McCASKEY. May 26, 1983.
