Envoy replaced

NZPA Washington President Ronald Reagan has decided to replace the United States Ambassador to El Salvador, Mr Deane Hinton, the “Washington Post” reports. The “Post”, quoting unnamed Administration officials, said that the decision to replace Mr Hinton had been dictated by the fact that “he’s tired out after two years in a pres-sure-cooker” and by Mr Reagan’s desire to staff main Central American policy positions with people loyal to his ideological view of the region. The report comes after Mr Reagan replaced the Assistant Secretary of State for Inter-American Affairs, Mr Thomas Enders. Mr Hin-

ton, a career diplomat, is finishing two years in El Salvador. He was chosen for the past by Mr Reagan’s first Secretary of State, Alexander Haig.

The “Post” said that aministration officials did not identify a replacement for Mr Hinton. Mr Enders has been replaced by Langhorne Motley, United States Ambassador to Brazil.

® El Salvador’s Government had released nearly 100 political prisoners in the last week, including eight prominent Leftist leaders, under the country’s new amnesty law, Amnesty Commission officials said on Friday.
