German cities flooded

NZPA Cologne Floodwaters from the rain-swollen River Rhine yesterday flooded the Old Quarter of Cologne for the second time in six weeks. The river, barred to waterway traffic on Saturday, breached dykes, and flooded offices, clubs, and boutiques near the city’s historic twin-spired cathedral. A city official said that the floods would rise above a 13-year record level set on April 13 when several Rhine cities, including the nearby capital of Bonn, were affected. On Friday a man was killed when a dam burst at Sasbach in south-west Germany. Seven people died later in the day when an express train ploughed into a mudslide near Cologne.

Officials said that the Rhine was rising 4cm an hour. Roads were already flooded in the vulnerable Beuel and Mehlem districts of Bonn.

Communities along the banks ,of the Moselle River, between the cities of Trier and Coblenz, had also been inundated,®: a Trier City official said.
