Swedish Navy stays on the sub. trail
NZPA-Reuter Sundsvall The Swedish Navy yesterday fired two volleys of depth charges after receiving indications of an intruding submarine off the northern industrial port of Sundsvall; said a Defence Staff spokesman. Volleys of charges were fired twice after the Navy had what he called very clear indications of a submarine south-east of the island of Alnoe in the Bay
of Sundsvall. The Navy was still waiting to see the results of its action. The hunt for foreign submarines has been going on for 11 days. Divers said that they had found no trace of any damaged submarine in the area where two mines were detonated on Wednesday, but did not rule out the possibility that a damaged vessel could have limped away.
They remained convinced that at least two submarines, probably a midget and its conventional-size “mother” were in the area.
■ Naval experts speculated that the smaller submarine might have been trying to reach “mother” when the Navy struck. But the Defence Staff would not comment on this. Another submarine hunt off the west coast town of Uddevalla has been called off.
