Murder charge priests leave prison

NZPA-Reuter Bacolod Three Catholic priests arrested on charges of murder left prison yesterday after President Ferdinand Marcos had ordered they be placed under house arrest instead, said the police. An Australian priest, Brian Gore, an Irishman, Niall O’Brien and Vicente Dangan, a Filipino, left their cell 24 hours after they had entered prison at Kabangkalan police station in the Central Philippines. Despite the President’s order, the three at first chose to stay in jail. They said that they would not leave six Filipino church workers who were also arrested, but not included in the release order.

The nine, together with six other Filipinos, are accused of complicity in the killing of the Kabangkalan Mayor Pablo Zola, and four of his associates in the central province of Negros Occidental in 1981.
