Volleyball tour side
Four Christchurch players have been included in the New Zealand men’s volleyball team, which will tour New Caledonia from May 28 until June 9.
They are Tony Barnett, Gilbert Enoka, and Mike Dudson from Skellerup All Stars C.U., and Alan Pierce from Christchurch Teachers’ College. In addition Doug Smith, of Skellerups, is a non-travelling reserve. The tour will include three tests and will be an important lead up to the Asian championships in Tokyo later this year. The team will be coached by Mr Ctirad Benacek, with Mr Peter Conroy (Auckland) as his assistant, and Mr Jack Bleyendaal (Christchurch) as the tour manager. The team is: David Becroft, Tony Natapu, Neville Thomson (Sparta, Auckland), Tom Miller (Le Coq Sportif, Auckland), Lewis Kahn, Russell Woods (Northcote, Auckland), Tony Barnett, Gilbert Enoka, Mike Dudson (Skellerup All Stars C.U., Christchurch), John Howard (Tauranga), Mark Gray (Eagles, Wellington), Alan Pierce (Christchurch Teachers’ College), Graeme Steel (Rongotai, Wellington). Non-travelling reserves: Mark Dixon (Sparta, Auckland), Doug Smith (Skellerup All Stars C.U.), and Alisdhir Smifil (Eagles, Wellington).
