Super, call scares former M.P.

PA Wellington The National Party would lose the next election if it reviewed the National Superannuation fund, the former Wellington Central member of Parliament, Mr Ken Comber, told the annual conference of the Wellington division of the party yesterday. Speaking to a remit from Hawke’s Bay delegates seeking revision of the scheme “because of the country’s inability to service it,” Mr Comber said such a move would be “political dynamite.”

The remit was later rejected by 71 votes to 62. Mr Comber asked if the conference had forgotten that the superannuation scheme was a major reason why the National Party swept the polls in 1975. The Minister of Lands, Mr Young, said that the scheme cost $450 million a year more than the former universal scheme would cost now, but New Zealand could support the outlay.
