Toastmasters’ award for Mr Deaker

Mr Michael Deaker will receive the New Zealand Toastmasters’ Gavel Award at the Toastmasters’ annual convention in Invercargill today. Mr Deaker, a radio commentator, Invercargill’s deputy mayor, and principal of Kingswell High School, is to be presented with the award in recognition of his “significant contribution to communication in New Zealand through his demonstrated personal capabilities.”

Mr Deaker’s commentaries have been broadcast on such programmes as “The

Tonight Show,” “Breakfast News” and “Looking at Ourselves.” He has also been a journalist and leader writer for the “Southland Times,” and has also appeared on television as a chairman, presenter. and interviewee on such programmes as “Questions. Please/’ “Newsmakers,” and “Fourth Estate.” Other recipients of the award have been the Prime Minister, Mr Muldoon; Professor Kenneth Cumberland; Sir Graham Latimer, chairman of the New Zealand Maori Council; and Mr Bob Jones.
