Hearing of appeal by freezing worker
PA Wellington The hearing of an appeal by a freezing worker who sought an injunction against his union has begun in the Court of Appeal. Mr Lawrence Sumner is appealing against the refusal of the District Court to grant him an injunction against the Hawke’s Bay branch of the Freezing Workers’ Union, the New Zealand Freezing Workers’ Union and the Hawke’s Bay Farmers’ Meat Company, Ltd, to restrain them ditom
doing anything to affect his employment Mr Sumner refused to pay a levy the union raised at the Whakatu Freezing Works on behalf of the Islington works workers. Other unionists refused to work with him and he was stood down by the management The case was part heard on Wednesday and adjourned to this afternoon. The Court comprised Mr Justice Cooke, Mr Justice Richardson and Sir Thaddeus McCarthy.
