N.Z. tennis victory

NZPA-Reuter Dusseldorf

New Zealand handed out a surprise defeat to France in the “Blue Group” of the World Team Tennis Cup, with a hard-working 2-1 result. Chris Lewis won his singles match against Dominique Bedel, 6-3, 6-2, but the N.Z. pair lost to Bedel and Bernard Fritz, 4-6, 5-7, in the doubles.

The French star, Yannick Noah, who had lost, 6-7, 6-7, to Russell Simpson the previous day was later reported to have left Dusseldorf and flown home to Paris dejected, failing to turn up for the doubles tie. The tournament director, Horst Klosterkemper, commented: “I don’t know where he is and I don’t want to say anything about the matter.”
