Art reviews

A total of J3OO in cash prizes, plus art books are being offered to the prizewinners in the new Art . Review Awards, jointly sponsored by the Robert McDougall Art Gallery and “The Star.”

The awards, which will be launched at a symposium on writing about the visual arts on April 30, aim to identify and encourage future art journalists, and to improve standards of art reviewing. Prizes are given in two categories, secondary and adult, with particular emphasis on tertiary students. “The real shortage of people able to translate into language the ideas carried

in works of art, and to communicate an informed viewpoint, may be because encouragement and experience has not been provided in this very demanding field,” says the gallery director, Mr John Coley.

Two art critics, Brett Riley of “The Star” and John Hurrell of the “Press,” will join the well-known humorist and social commentator A. K. Grant in a panel discussion at the launching symposium. This will be followed by workshops in which participants will be given practical experience in reviewing art works.
