Mail-order footballer

Canterbury’s first mailorder footballer, Tony Hall (above), hopes to make his debut in Christchurch club rugby this Saturday. The 19-year-old Scot has travelled 13,000 miles from his. home country to play for Sydenham, after answering an advertisement in the British Publication, “Rugby World.” Gaining overseas rugby experience is nothing new

for the softly-spoken scrumhalf or fly-half. As a Scottish schoolboys’ representative he has played in France and on a month-long tour of Zimbabwe. His period with Sydenham will last five months, and he does not anticipate any difficulties in adapting his game to New Zealand pat- . terns. He rates the senior club rugby he has seen so

far in Christchurch as being on a par with that in Kelso, his home club. A dab hand at the drop kick, and an occasional goal-kicker, Tony Hall will probably start with Sydenham in the senior B grade. In the meantime, club officials, who chose him from more than 20 applicants, are seeking a job for him. -
