Startling archery effort
Ann Shurrock of Ashburton set a staggering eight national records at the week-end to gain inclusion in the New Zealand archery team to compete at the world championships in Los Angeles next October. Competing at the national trials at Burwood Park, Mrs Shurrock passed the qualifying mark for the world event . with a combined
score of 2520, easily surpassing the required score of 2450.
Neroli Fairhall, Christchurch’s Commonwealth Games gold medallist, also qualified for Los Angeles with a score of 2490. She bettered Mrs Shurrock’s scores at 70 metres in the first round, and 50 and 30 metres in the second round. Mrs Shurrock’s records
were for a single and double round Score, a single score at 50 and 60 metres, a double score at 30, 50 and 60 metres and the short F.I.T.A. record.
No men have yet reached the qualifying mark of 2470, although Dave McAulley of Christchurch was the top points scorer with 2305. Further trials will be held in the coming months.
