Unions to meet on Clyde issue
PA Dunedin The combined trade unions engaged in the construction of the Clyde dam will meet in Dunedin on Tuesday to decide whether to resume negotiations with the Zublin-Williamson joint venture.
A meeting between the two parties has been tentatively set down before an independent chairman for Thursday in Dunedin, but this will only take place if bans on the joint venture by unions are lifted.
Tuesday’s meeting will discuss “the mechanics” of
lifting the ban, if the unions agree to resume talks, said their advocate, Mr C. J. Fisher.
The purpose of Thursday’s meeting will be to find common ground for a joint application to the Government on which workers will be covered by the higher wages in the site agreement.
In view of the likelihood of Thursday’s meeting taking place, the Cabinet is expected again to defer imposing on both parties restrictions on an excemption from the wage freeze.
