Protest support

Sir,—J. Drake (March 28) suggests that parishioners in congregations whose ministers took modest non-violent action to protest at Waitangi would not support them. Like all congregations they contain people of different views but overwhelmingly the congregations do support them. He states his approval of the Salvation Army for withdrawing from the N.C.C. This is incorrect. The Salvation Army has been a member of the N.C.C. for 43 years and is still a member. Nor has the Salvation Army withdrawn from the World Council of Churches. It has merely changed the nature of its affiliation. It still participates in W.C.C. programmes and receives large sums of money through the W.C.C. for its excellent work. J. Drake should know that some N.C.C. churches spend more money and effort on the needy than does the Salvation Army, for all its splendid efforts. The small fund used to help families of protesters suffering hardship came not from N.C.C. funds but from donations earmarked for that purpose by donors. — Yours, etc., ANGUS H. MacLEOD, General secretary, National Council of Churches. March 28, 1983.
