Gin traps

Sir,—lt should be an offence for anyone to use a gin trap in their garden, and all people who do should be prosecuted. The pain and suffering to a treasured pet is agony too, for the owners. Besides that, one day they might catch a child. I saw an account in the Nelson paper last year of a cat that had to have his leg amputated after being caught in a gin trap in a garden, and the vet said he has 10 to 12 cases a year from similar accidents. It is time that these barbaric devices were banned in New Zealand. There are already 2 humane traps that can be bought and used here. England has banned them, why not New Zealand? — Yours, etc., V. MITCHELL. Brightwater, March 27, 1983.

Sir,—May I also protest at the use of gin traps to trap animals, particularly cats — in many cases pets. Surely anyone using these traps must realise the torture they are inflicting on the animal. Am I old-fashioned to suggest that anyone using these traps should have their hand put into one?—Yours, etc ’’ MARJORY E. McDonald WALKER. March 24, 1983.
