Doctors to discuss technology
Several hundred doctors will meet in Palmerston North next week for the three-day biennial conference of the New Zealand Medical Association. The theme of the conference, which will begin on March 17. is “Future shock in medicine." It will look at ways doctors can come to grips with changes in technology and economics.
Doctors will discuss the cost of new technology, the changes it has brought about, and "whether less glamorous branches of medicine, such as general practice, mental health, and geriatrics, are being left in the lurch."
Other issues to be discussed are the successes of alternative medicine; whether six years is long enough to train as a doctor and patients’ rights. As a change from medical matters, one of the conference’s guest speakers is Mr Hamish Keith, former chairman of the Queen Elizabeth II Arts Council, who will talk about the effect of technology on art. The New Zealand Medical Society for Alcohol and Alcoholism will meet on March 16, before the conference, to discuss alcohol problems and their detection.
