W.E.A. looking for tutors
More volunteer tutors are required to meet the big demand for the adult reading assistance programme run by the W.E.A. The programme co-ordina-tor, Mrs Barbara Petre, said that more referrals than ever were being made to the programme, which had been running since 1977. About 40 enrolments had been taken this year, compared with 25
at the same time last year. There are 140 tutors for the 156 students and more volunteers are required to train as tutors. Prospective tutors need to be self-confi-dent and able to relate well to other people. Previous teaching experience is not necessary. Volunteers do a tutor course of 20 hours before being attached to a student.
The tutors meet their students once or twice a week for up to two hours each time, usually in the evenings. Anyone interested in joining the April tutor-training course should get in touch with Mrs Petre at the programme’s centre, 72 Gloucester Street, on telephone 69479.
