Angry reaction to teachers’ job idea
PA Auckland A suggestion that teaching jobs should be created until unemployed teachers could be absorbed into permanent positions has prompted an angry response from the Minister of Education, Mr Wellington. 'The president of the Educational Institute, Mr G. Brown, said earlier in the week that, despite an . unemployment problem at the be-, ginning of last year, ‘‘during the course of 1982, 1600 teachers were recruited into the service other than from teachers' colleges, simply to maintain school staffing.”
Mr Wellington said in • Auckland last evening: “I'm very annoyed and bitterly disappointed. The New Zealand Educational Institute will cut no ice with the Government talking this way. "Some boards are playing a double game (with the Minister’s office and the news media). They have not portrayed a fair picture through reporters to teachers and parents. . “Mr Brown’s final entry is the last straw. “The thing has become a nonsense. People have used ’ data to suit their own purposes."
