False arrests alleged
PA Wellington Police officers appeared to act unlawfully at the Waitangi celebrations on Sunday, Labour's spokesman on ju’sx tice. Mr F. D. O'Flynn, has said. Mr O'Flynn said that almost 100 people were arrested at Waitangi but few charges were laid, none apparently against 50 people arrested near a bridge. “Some protesters were actually held for four to five hours, presumably until the
ceremonies were well over, and then released. "On the face of it. these people appear to have actions for wrongful imprisonment and false arrest." Mr O'Flynn said. "Quite a lot of people who had nothing to do with any intended protest were caught up in this net." Mr O'Flynn said no-one would doubt that the police had a right to ask protesters to move out of the way. even though they might not have been obstructive or violent.
