Tourist complex proposed

PA Ashburton A high-class tourist complex proposed for Methven, the Mount Hutt Country Club, could be functioning in the coming season. The Ashburton County Council's town and country planning committee heard an ’ application by Shearer Bros this week for planning consent to erect the tourist flat or motel complex comprising 20 self-contained units, manager’s quarters, lounge, swimming pool, sauna, and spa.

An objection to the application was withdrawn before the submissions were heard. Mr Terry Shearer, a director of the company, said in evidence that building of the complex would start as soon as the necessary consent was granted. Mr Shearer, with his three brothers and four Australians, are the shareholders in the venture. He told the committee that Methven must look at providing high-standard accommodation for the "affluent” tourist.
