Govt’s hospital policy attacked

Christchurch must have adequate hospital buildings, beds, and services to meet the demand, says the member of Parliament for Yaldhurst, Mr M. A. Connelly. Mr Connelly was commenting on the statement by the medical superintendent of Princess Margaret Hospital. Mr Heath Thompson, that medical services in the hospital were in danger of breaking down because of the shortage of beds, especially for acute cases. “There is an obligation on the Government to take immediate steps to resolve that." Mr Connelly said. “Obviously politics relating to geriatric care call for

urgent review." Mr Connelly said that the lack of long-stay geriatric beds in hospitals and nursing homes was contributing to bed shortages at Princess Margaret Hospital. Geriatric patients were occupying hospital beds that otherwise would be available for acute medical cases, he said. “The Government's approach to the building programme at Christchurch Hospital and to the provision of medical services in the Christchurch region generally has been one of procrastination and neglect,” Mr Connelly said.
