Winds disrupt festival
PA Auckland High winds disrupted events at the Sweetwaters Festival yesterday, sending crowds packing early and bringing the main musical programme to an abrupt halt about 3 p.m. Dust and debris swept the lOOha Pukekawa tent city from early morning as thousands of spectators headed for home. The Ministry of Transport said the main traffic flow was about 10 a.m. with little congestion after that. By 3 p.m.. after one power cut and with wind threatening to blow over towering sound stacks on the heavily-
equipped main stage, only about 3000 people remained. Most were resigned to the announcement by the master of ceremonies, the poet Gary McCormack, cancelling the show. Organisers confirmed their earlier assertions that the festival was the best yet. inspite of a smaller crowd of between 25,000 and 30.000. In spite of a record 70 arrests, by late yesterday, the police reported that the crowd was generally wellbehaved in view of the size. Many of the arrests were for theft and burglary, but 28 people were charged with cannabis-related offences.
