New library on the cards

Linwood should have a new library by 1987. The Christchurch City Council's cultural committee agreed yesterday to seek about $250,000 from the recreation rate to pay for a new building. It will be built near the Linwood Mall on Buckleys Road. The committee considered four options for providing a library to replace the existing one at the intersection of Stanmore Road and Worcester Street. The council could either rent premises in the mall, lease a library built by a developer, finance a new library by loan, or from rates.

The first three options were considered too expensive. Renting mall space would cost an estimated $57,000 a year; leasing a library built by a developer. $36,600 a year; and financing a $250,000 building by loan would cost $40,000 a year in loan repayments, rates and insurance. The Linwood branch would complete a network of libraries approved in principle in 1969. The committee considers that the four established branches — Spreydon, New Brighton, Papanui and Shirley — plus a new one at Linwood, would provide adequate coverage for the foreseeable future.
