Publisher dies in Auckland
PA Auckland A millionaire publisher. Mr Arnold Dean Baldwin, died in Auckland on Saturday after a short illness. He was 72. Mr Baldwin, who received the Queen's Service Order for public service in the recent New Year's honours, built up his small directory company. Universal Business Directories, into a major New Zealand and Australian enterprise, publishing business directories, maps, trade and yachting magazines. His leisure time was spent on the sea. Mr Baldwin and a fellow businessman. Mr George Woolier, pioneered the now annual procession of New Zealand big game fishermen to Hawaii. He was a governor of the Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament.
Mr Baldwin was born in Gore, and was the oldest in a large family. He left school at 14 and later joined the stock and station agency of a former Prime Minister, Sir Joseph Ward (J. G. Ward and Son. Ltd.) In 1977, U.8.D.. which included Wise Publications. Unity Press, and Chandler and Company. Ltd. sold out to New Zealand News, Ltd. but Mr Baldwin retained ownership of the U.B.D. group of companies in Australia. as well as printing and carbon and ink interests in New Zealand. He also had farming interests. He managed four One Ton Cup yacht challenges and was a long-time member of the Hauraki Gulf Maritime Park Board. He is survived by his wife, and two daughters.
