Migration increase for N.Z.
PA Wellington The rate at which New Zealand lost people slowed dramatically last year.
Provisional figures from the Statistics Department yesterday show that New Zealand lost 1594 people permanently or long-term in the year ended December, 1982. However, in 1981 16.732 people left New Zealand permanently or long-term. The figures show that New Zealand had a net migration gain of 9965 for 1982, but those people were classified by the department as shortterm, which is 12 months or less.
For the year ended December, 1981. there was a net migration loss of 6240 people. The figures include passengers and crews, but excludes movements of Armed Forces personnel on military exercises.
The statistics will be replaced by final figures when more de’tailed processing is finished.
