Offer of aid for Pitcairn

NZPA London The British Government is reportedly studying an offer by an American businessman to supply lavish aid to the tiny island colony of Pitcairn in the South Pacific. The American, Mr A. M. Ratliff, of Virginia, wants Government permission to set up home on an uninhabited island in the Pitcairn

group in exchange. His application for residency could create a precedent for other scattered dependencies, the “Sunday Telegraph” reported. The Government is likely to grant his request if the islanders agree. Mr Ratliff has offered to build an airstrip and supply more than SNZI million for the Pitcairn people who are descendants of the Bounty

mutineers. Mr Ratliff’s “home" would be Henderson Island, a 20 sq km coral atoll. Henderson Island also has a strange past. Survivors from an American whaler that encountered a monster whale — suppossedly inspiring the story of “Moby Dick” — reached safety there. They tried to survive by cannibalism, but died from lack of water.
