Fire destroys factory in Auckland
PA Auckland A fire last evening destroyed a Penrose factory of a company which started the commercial production of Maori carvings and souvenirs in Auckland. More than 60 firemen could not save the premises of H. and L. Wakelin, Ltd, in Green Park Road. The manager, Mr R. G. Wakelin, said that the com-
pany was established 35 years ago by his father, Mr Harry Wakelin, as a joinery and cabinet-making business. The company started producing Maori carvings and souvenirs 17 years ago. Mr Wakelin said that the business was regarded as a commercial pioneer in its field. Fire-safety officers were last evening trying to establish the cause of the blaze.
