Divers find Jewels, gold
PA Auckland jhe Northland diver, Mr Kelly Tarlton, says he has found jewels glittering afpong the mud and sand on the wreck of the steamer Tasmania as his team began to > salvage some of the Rothschild riches lost in 1897 off Mahia Peninsula. JJWr Tarlton and three other divers struck success yesterday after spending two weeks hosing a two-metre layer of mud off the shipwreck. Sifting through the barnacles, shells and rust vacuumed up from the wreck, they discovered a gold sovereign case, two jade
and gold pendants, two gold whistles, and a sapphire and gold brooch. Mr Tarlton said he believed much more treasure sank with the Tasmania. “We know there are emeralds there, and more gold. We will keep looking for another four of five weeks.” He recovered about 300 of the Rothschild jewels in 1977. They are now on display in his museum, in Waitangi. The Tasmania sank off Mahia Peninsula, between Gisborne and Napier, carrying the . jewels of Isadore Jonah Rothschild, a member of the famops family of international bankers.
