N.Z. car salesman faces Sydney fraud charges
NZPA Sydney A New Zealand-born salesman has appeared in Waverley Court. Sydney, on fraud charges over the running of a car sales yard in the western Sydney suburb of Ashfield last vear.
Timothy James Arscott, aged 24. faced charges of conspiracy to cheat and defraud, and dishonestly obtaining a financial advantage by deception between February and March last year. He did not plead.
The charges arose from the running of a car yard in Parramatta Road. - Ashfield, by Arscott and his brother. The police said that in about three months, Arscott and his brother took delivery of 14 cars valued at about $70,000 to be sold on consignment.
However, the police alleged the cars were sold for less than the consignment price and the money paid into the defendant's bank instead of the owners. Arscott then closed the account and went to live in the United States.
The police said his brother had already been arrested on
similar charges and commuted to trial.
They also said Arscott failed to appear in court in July last year to face charges of indecent assault and possessing cannabis. In court. Arscott's counsel told the Magistrate, Mr Ravmond Henry. S.M..‘that his client did not admit any of the allegations put forward by the police and would plead not guilty. He saidd Arscott acknow-
ledged that he was wrong in leaving the country and had returned to Australia knowing he would be arrested.
Arscott was arrested at Mascot Airport in Sydney on January 6 on his return from New Zealand where he had been celebrating his parents’ wedding anniversary. The Magistrate allowed bail and adjourned the matter to the Castlereagh Court of Petty Sessions on January 17 when a hearing date would be fixed.
