President Reagan announced yesterday that he had chosen a White House aide. Elizabeth Dole, as his new Secretary of Transportation.
The nomination of Mrs Dole, who replaces Drew Lewis, has to be confirmed by the Senate. Mrs Dole, the wife of Senator Robert Dole (Republican), of Kansas, is at present special assistant to the President for public liaison.
Mr Lewis resigned as Transportation Secretary to go into private business. Mr Reagan opened the news conference by announcing that Elizabeth Dole will be the first woman to head a Cabinet department in the Reagan Administration.
Soon after the press conference appearance. an elated Mrs Dole told friends that the appointment had been made so suddenly that she had not been able to reach her husband to tell him about it.
