Auckland victory never in doubt

PA Napier Auckland romped to a nine-wicket win over Central Districts in a Shell Cup oneday cricket' match at McLean Park, Napier, yesterday.

Central Districts were in trouble from the time Wiltshire won the toss and elected to bat and after 25 overs had scored only 50 runs. The “man of the match,” John Bracewell, took three for 19 with 10 overs of his off-spin, while the medium pacer, Tom Hellaby, also claimed three Central wickets, but at considerably greater expense. The opening bowlers, Martin Crowe and Warren Stott, each took two wickets. CENTRAL DISTRICTS . R. Pierce lbw b Crowe ... 8 I. Smith b Stott 7 1. Snook lbw b Crowe .... 1 J. The Aucklanders scored 115 for the loss of only Trevor Franklin’s wicket in 29.1 overs in reply to Central Districts’ 111.

Victory was secured by Austin Parsons (57 not out) and captain John Reid (23 not out) who shared an unbeaten second-wicket stand of 63. Parsons struck four boundaries in his 108minute effort, which also included 21 singles.

An Auckland win was never in doubt with Franklin (19) and Parsons giving their side a good start after Central Districts had failed to score enough to give the visitors a decent target. The captain, John Wiltshire, was a lone figure in Central’s dismal effort of 111 in 43.5 overs. He came in with the team already reeling at 15 for two and contributed 39 before being ninth man out with the score on 99. Wiltshire hit two of the six boundaries in the Central innings, and stayed at the crease for 123 minutes. He was the last of the three lbw victims in the home team line-up. Matthew Toynbee (11) and Steve Gill (15) in the middle order were the only other Central batsmen to reach double figures as wickets fell regularly to an accurate Auckland attack.
