Decisive win to Otago

PA Alexandra Otago's first win in the Shell Cup for almost two years — a decisive 153 runs victory against Wellington — was given a rapturous reception by a 2000 crowd at Molyneux Park yesterday. Otago produced an excellent all-round performance to inflict the first defeat in the Shell Cup for two seasons on the holder. The loss was Wellington’s first in 10 matches.

Otago was in control throughout — Wayne Blair set the tone when he cracked the first ball of the match from Tony Pigott to the point boundary. Otago scored 263 for seven wickets in 205 minutes in its 50 overs, the run-rate overaging 5.24. Wellington, set back on its heels by the early loss of Robert Vance and a hostile spell of pace bowling, from Richard Webb, was never in contention, being dismissed for a meagre 110 in 145 minutes and 36.1 overs.

Individual highlights in Otago’s win were the batting of Bruce Blair, the highest scorer of the match with 76, and Richard Hoskin, the bowling of Webb and Carl Dickel, and the wicket-keep-ing of Barry Milburn, who had three stumpings and a catch.

After Wayne Blair had provided the steadying influence at the top of the Otago batting, the match-winning partnership came from Bruce Blair and Hoskin (58)
