Free meat still sought

The Canterbury Trades Council still wants surplus meat given to the needy in New Zealand. The council has received the Government’s reply to its request that the meat be distributed as a Christmas gesture. Yesterday, the council's

secretary, Mr G. G. Walker, said that the Acting Minister of Agriculture. Mr Couch, had replied that the Government did not own any meat, and that the Meat Board was confident that total meat production could be disposed of in existing markets. Mr Walker said the matter

would not rest with that reply. The council would research the matter further. The council was concerned that the news media had not yet found out what price New Zealand was receiving for its surplus mutton sold to Japan, “as this is being kept secret by the Meat Board.”
