‘William’ not so popular

NZPA London Against all odds, readers of “The Times” have not overwhelmingly chosen to name their male offspring William.

They have not chosen William, it appears, in sufficient numbers to manage even second place for 1982.

But the newest Prince will not be alone, as at least 144 Williams joined the British population in 1982. Margaret and Thomas Brown, of York, spent their year watching the birth notices in “The Times” and, after a long Yuletide tallying, sent the results in a letter.

This year they report that 3990 births were announced in “The Times,” and of them 1991 were boys and 1909, girls. Elizabeth, it appears, retains top spot for girls, for the seventh year in succession.

But of the boys, 209 of them were named James and 154, Edward, ahead of William (144). After Elizabeth (110), Louise topped the list for girls (106), followed by Jane (85).
