Dickie Bird aghast

NZPA London A leading English umpire, Dickie Bird, has come out against electronic aids for cricket judgments. Neil Allen, in his column in yesterday’s “Standard” newspaper, reported that Mr Bird was unmoved by criticism of Australian umpires in the present test series with England. “Every umpire, whatever people may say, is out to do

a first class, honest job,” said Mr Bird. England’s tour manager, Doug Insole, upset at some test decisions, is reportd to have proposed electronic video aids for umpires. Mr Bird said, “I’m not going to say. things against Mr Insole because he’s a friend of mine. It’s just my view that the game must be about leaving it to the umpires alone."
