Sensational bowls end
PA Timaru The final day of the South Island bowling tournament at Timaru yesterday produced a sensational end to the fours. The contestants were both South Canterbury composite teams: N. Stanway (St Andrews). K. Sammons (Town and Country). R. Stowell (St Andrew's), and D. Robinson (Ashbury) playing R. Lienert (Ashbury). S. Fleming. B. Wallace (Temuka) and W. Richards (Town and Country). After the high standard shown by both finalists in earlier postsection rounds, the final was
something of an anti-climax until the last ends. At 9-27 down after the Stanway sensationally picked three shots on the 20th followed up with a treble of fives on the next three ends to level the score at 27 with two to play. Lienert scored a single on the second last, but Stanway evened on the last then picked up one on the extra end for a 29-28 win. The strong Invercargill RS.A. father and son pair, John and Jack Flynn, easily won the pairs title. 24-9. with two ends to spare, against Bert Yule and Brian Papps (Meadowbank).
