Truckloads of junk for Play Day
Truckloads of junk will get top billing for National Play Day in Christchurch on January 24. Local factories have given offcuts and waste material to build a junk playground on the day at North Hagley Park where the Christchurch City Council is organising an afternoon of “creative play" for children and adults.
Supervisors will oversee proceedings and hammers and nails will be provided to build a playground, which is the main programme attraction.
A council recreation assistant, Miss Deirdre Ryan, said that the enthusiasm shown by resident groups and individuals taking part in the project was impressive. Planning started last month for a “low-key” affair, but the programme had mushroomed with new ideas.
Body painting, kite making, games, theatre, dance, and gymnastics, are all part of the project which will run from noon to 4 p.m. Christchurch firemen will service a fire engine which will be used to show children how water is pumped back into Victoria Lake. _
