Bee El out of Derby

By JEFF SCOTT

A minor hairline fracture of a pastern will prevent the promising Weedons pacer, Bee El, from contesting the New Zealand Derby Stakes at Addington Raceway next month.

The three-year-old son of Boyden Hanover has npt raced since he easily eclipsed a useful field in the first heat of the Courier Systems Stakes at Addington Raceway on Cup Day in November.

Among those left in his wake that day were Borana and Lyndon Robert, two of the principal contenders for the Timaru Challenge Stakes at Washdyke this evening. Bee El, which recorded a smart 3 min 22.6 s for the

2600 m from a stand at his last start, had won two of his five starts this season before being forced off the scene.

“We’ve been swimming him, but we plan to start working him. again in about four or five weeks,” Bee El’s part-owner and trainer, Peter Robertson, said yesterday. “The fracture is not serious and is just on the corner — he’s running round the paddock really well,” Robertson said.

Robertson’s talented juvenile, Natural Guy, has thrived since his runaway five lengths win in the Rangiora Raceway Stakes last month and will race next in a $3OOO two-year-old event at Addington on January 15.
