Conference value questioned

The value of Christchurch Polytechnic Council representatives attending a recent conference was questioned last evening. Mr M. Graham queried the need for representatives to attend the Technical Institutes’ Association conference, after reading an article in an Auckland newspaper on the conference. Mr Graham asked the Polytechnic Council meeting what the trip had achieved for Christchurch Polytechnic students.

The council’s chairman, Mr C. H. Russell, said he. would not give up his time for the conference if he thought it was a waste.

. The exchange of ideas at the conference was the main reason representatives went, he said.

Numbers increase

An increase in the quantity and quality of applications for next year's full-time courses was reported. More people were looking to the polytechnic as a means of obtaining job-re-lated qualifications. Polyflex Polyflex — a form of glide-time, perfected by a staff member — may soon be introduced at the polytechnic. The council has agreed that the method should be given a 12-month trial, and that the approval of the Director-General of Education be sought. Polyflex's aim is to give staff greater independence and responsibility for their working hours.
