Aust. market closes easier
Prices moved narrowly in dull trading on Australian stock exchanges yesterday, which brokers attributed to investors closing their books for the year. The 1500 all-ordinaries index was 0.5 points down at 473.2, with the all-industrials up 0.3 at 602.6, and the allresources 1.1 points lower at 368.8. B. rose 6c to 630 c, but C.S.R. lost 3c to 295 c, W.M.C., M.I.M. and Bougainville were steady. C. fell 15c to 360 c as 11 million shares traded in Melbourne at 345 c ahead of the proposed voluntary windup of B.H. South.
Gold stocks firmed, with Central Norseman 20c up at 780 c. Oil and gas issues were mixed. The industrial sector was particularly quiet. Banks and retailers firmed while transport stocks were steady. Brewers were lower and petroleum stocks unchanged. Coal stocks improved, with Umal 9c up at 171 c, Sugars were higher, with Bundaberg 4c up at 195 c. Dunlop rose 4c to 100 c.
