Abortion clinic

Sir,-R. P. Dalziel believes that “Life begins at conception” is a scientific truth but it is not even a scientific statement. It is not testable until it is put into a more precise form, such as “The genetic composition of an individual cannot change after conception.” In the same way the statement, “The earth moves around the sun” was untestable until Galileo added a frame of reference and showed: “Relative to the fixed stars the earth moves around the sun.” Life is a very complex notion and its origins are still unknown to us, along with many of its mechanisms and processes. To a small boy with a hammer, the whole world looks like a nail. For some people, the slogan: “Life begins at conception" is just such a hammer, but it is not science. — Yours, etc.. ALAN WILKINSON.
