New roading funds ‘pathetic’ sum
PA Wellington The Government's allocation for new reading has been described as a pathetic little sum. Labour's spokesman on works. Mr F. M. Colman, said the Government had told the National Roads Board that less than 2 per cent of its budget for 1983-84 was for new roading. “Never have road users paid so much and received so little in roading returns,” Mr Colman said. "The $325 million budget for 1983-84 is a mere 15.6 per cent increase on the current year's budget, and falls far
short of movement in the roading cost index of about 20 per cent for the year," he said. Mr Colman said roads would come under even heavier pressure if the Government went ahead with deregulating rail and delicensing road transport. This would mean 700 extra-heavy trucks on the roads. “Our present roading structure just will not cope. There needs to be far more money spent on meeting the needs for this devastating change to our transport system," he said.
