Length of school holidays

Sir.--1 agree with Steven Robinson (December 9) over his belief that the school Christmas and New Year holidays are of too long a duration. In order to relieve the boredom which often prevails during more prolonged holidays. I feel that instead of having a summer vacation lasting seven weeks, it would be more sensible to nearly halve that time by reducing it to one month. This would still leave ample time to relax, have a vacation, and return to school for a new year feeling refreshed. The remaining three weeks holiday could be enjoyed at intervals throughout the school year when a break from work would be beneficial to most children, thereby having a number of short holidays, which is. I believe, more advantageous than the several long ones we have at present. —Yours, etc., J. D. ADDISON. December 9, 1982.
