Protesters ‘refused’ jobs

Parliamentary reporter The Police Department has refused to employ persons who were concerned with last year's anti-Spring-bok tour movement, says the member of Parliament for Papanui. Mr M. K. Moore. He asked the Minister of Police, Mr Couch, this week jf it was true that the police had refused to take on cadets, students or persons employed on Labour Department work schemes who had been concerned with the anti-tour movement. He said later that he had been approached by persons who said thev had been

refused jobs with the police because of their anti-tour involvement. Replying on behalf of Mr Couch.’ the Leader of the House, Mr Thomson, said that Mr Moore's question was incorrect “in the sense in which it was asked." "The police look for good character in all categories of staff." he said. Being involved in the antitour movement would not be enough to exclude applicants for jobs, but it would be different if they had been “implicated" in criminal activitv. he said.
