Strikers seek recompense
Fifteen storemen at Sea Freightways in Christchurch have been on strike since Monday in a dispute described by the secretary of the Canterbury Storemen and Packers’ Union, Mr P. E. Piesse, as a domestic matter. The workers will meet again on Monday. Mr Piesse said that they sought “recompense in response to a number of the company’s
activities.” A spokesman for Sea Freightways said that freight which was due to be shipped aboard the Union Lyttlelton to Australia on Thursday had to be left behind because of the strike. He said that the union wanted the company to help find ways of compensating the workers because of the wage freeze. Mr Piesse said that the union had suggested the com-
pany might give food vouchers or petrol vouchers to its workers. “Just as there is a difference between tax avoidance and tax evasion, so too is there a difference between avoiding and evading other legislation,” he said. Storemen at Alltrans in Christchurch also went on strike for two days over the same issue, but are now back at work.
